Translation is Very Important In Learning Process To Master English Language

English is a foreign language and it is very important for international relationship because as an international language, English was used by most people in the modern world. One important aspect of English like other languages is translation. Even though translation is very difficult to do, it is still done because of its importance for human beings whose mother tongue is not English. Without translation, the information, technology and so forth cannot be transferred into the target language.

Newmark (1995:56) stated: “Translation activity has one or more specific purposes and whichever they may be, the main aim of translation is to serve as a cross-cultural bilingual communication vehicle among peoples, and also most translation theorists agreed that translation is understood as a transfer process from a foreign language – or a second language – to the mother tongue. However, market requirements are increasingly demanding that translators transfer texts to a target language that is not their mother tongue, but a foreign language”

Furthermore, among other things that greatly influence the result of English teaching is a method. It was often considered of the most important thing in the process of teaching. The students found some difficulties caused by the unsuitable method using in teaching-learning process; both teacher and students got unsatisfactory result. To anticipate the problem above, a serious attention in presenting the suitable method in teaching skill was needed.
In Newmark, Nida (1964:155) stated “Technical translator is concerned with content, the literary translator with form. Successful translation involves one of the most complex intellectual challenges known to mankind”. It is not surprising; therefore, for centuries the debating over translation has centered on the question whether any translation can give an adequate rendering of the form and contends of original text. Since the time of Cicero professional translators have offered principles, either to depend a particular translation or instruct would be translators. The difficulties of translation were mostly discussed and described in terms of stylistic, namely, how to be “true” or “faithful” to the original text.

Richard (2002:19) stressed that: “Different views of language teaching lead to different views as to what the essential skills of teaching are, and to different approaches to the preparation of teachers”. In addition Sumardi (1975:20) also stated that: “The success or failure of the teaching language program is often evaluated from the method used by teacher, because the method determines the material and the way of teaching a language”. Translation is one of the most vital aspects to be mastered by the students of English. An explanation about translation and its function in language teaching is necessary. According to Nida in Newmark (1988:7) “Translation is defined as a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and/or statement in one language by the same message and/or statement in another language”. In addition Martin in Newmark (1978: 7) said that “Translation is to change into another language, retaining in the sense”. From the definition, it can be concluded that translation is very important in learning process to master English language.

             Newmark, (1988:19) Stated:

Translation theory’s main concern is to determine appropriate methods for widest possible of texts or text categories. Further, it provides a framework of principles, restricted rules and hints for translating text and criticizing translation, a background of problem solving. Thus, an institutional term or a metaphor or synonym in collocation may be each be translated in many ways, if it is out of context; in these areas, the theory demonstrates the possible translation procedures and the various arguments and against the use of one translation rather than another in a particular context.

Translation theory had attempted to give some insights into the relation between thought, the meaning language of universal, cultural and individual aspect of language and behavior, the understanding of cultures, and the interpretation of text that may be clarified by way of translation.

Newmark, (1995:56) stated that “I shall assume that you, the reader, are learning to translate into your language of habitual use, since that is the only way you can translate naturally, accurately and with maximum effectiveness. In fact, however, most translators do translate out of their own language”.

In addition, In Newmark (1988:335) Translation theorists stated there are some aspects in a translation text, they are as the following:
  • Firstly, there is comprehension and interpretation of texts which implies the management of the approach principles to various types of texts, considering the textual, referential, cohesion and naturalness levels. This competence includes reading comprehension and message interpretation (encoding and decoding).
  • Secondly, re-wording is also important. It means the application of the various strategies for the restitution process of the message (re-coding) by choosing the appropriate method(s), techniques and procedures. Among the most frequently used procedures for the restoration of ideas contained in a translation unit, a translator may resort to transfer, cultural or functional equivalent, synonymy, transposition, modulation, compensation, reduction and expansion or amplification. These skills constitute the essence of translating competence and should most strongly emphasize in the training prospective translators. For this purpose, it is also indispensable to make effective use of different types of documentation: Parallel texts, monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, encyclopedias, term data base, informants, and other sources.
  • Thirdly, translation theorists give great importance to the assessment of the result, i.e. evidencing the capacity to confront the translated text with the original text, being able to assess earnings and losses and showing self-correction capacity. It is the accurate revision of the output that will definitely result in a final translation of higher quality.
The conclusion of translation is to put the written or spoken into a different language. However, when we take some sentences in text, we should know what the text tell about.   The meaning of sentence is very important to know because that is part of information. Addition, translation is very useable when we want to know another country, culture, custom, people, and economy or geographic in English. But sometimes, most of people like go to Google translator, they consider that English is very difficult to studied and accepted.
